How to Hang Wallpaper

All our wallpapers and murals are digitally printed on the highest quality specially coated wallpapers to achieve luxury finishes.

Once you have received your new wallpaper from The Curator, we recommend your decorator carefully reads the steps below prior to decorating. Before hanging your wallpaper check that rolls are undamaged, we make every effort to ensure our wallcoverings are perfect but variations sometimes occur. It is your responsibility to check the product is free from defect before decorating. Also check the product code and batch reference are the same for each roll.

The Curator recommends due to our exclusivity and small print runs, if you are working within very close measurements that you purchase an extra roll. This will prevent any delays in completion or missing out on your required batch number if you need to order more later. This roll can be returned by courier at your own cost if not used, and is undamaged and unopened. The cost of this purchased roll will be refunded. Please contact us before returning any items.

Inspection of rolls

  1. We make every effort to ensure our wallcoverings are perfect but variations sometimes occur. It is the responsibility of the decorator to thoroughly inspect the product is free from fault or defect.
  2. Before hanging check rolls are undamaged and that they have the same batch number. Check the design and colour matches both edge to edge and roll to roll.
  3. Please retain all labels until decorating is complete, we will require them all if you have a complaint.
  4. The person decorating should inspect the paper after hanging 2-3 lengths, the decision to then continue is their responsibility.
  5. We cannot be held liable for consequential loss in the respect of defects apparent prior to hanging. No claims in access of one roll can be allowed for defects which are visible at the time of hanging.
  6. Remaining rolls will be required to be returned in original condition unopened.

Before you start

Tools you will need to hang our non-woven wallcovering:

  • Paste the wall paste. A premium quality ready mixed adhesive.
  • Floor protection
  • Paste brush or roller
  • Sharp knife or blade
  • Tape measure
  • Plumb bob or laser level
  • Clean sponge and bucket of clean water
  • Smoothing brush
  • Straight edge or metal ruler for trimming
  • A pencil
  • Sharp Scissors (large)
  • Felt or soft roller for seam edges
  • Soft cloth
  • Stepladder or indoor scaffold
  • Dark coloured wallpapers may require edges colouring with an artist chalk or pastel to prevent white edges showing at the seams.

Preparation

  1. Prepare walls by removing all traces of dirt, old wallpaper and loose paint etc.
  2. Ensure that all walls are a uniform pale colour to ensure that no colour surface contrast appear through the paper.
  3. Wash the surface and fill in any irregularities.
  4. Painted wall surfaces should be roughened with fine sandpaper to create a ‘key’.
  5. Absorbent surfaces, e.g., new plaster, should be ‘primed’ using diluted wallpaper adhesive or primer following the manufacturer’s instructions. Always allow this to fully dry out before hanging.
  6. We recommend the use of lining paper, hung horizontally which must be allowed to fully dry before hanging.
  7. Wallcoverings should never be hung on a wall with a history of damp.

Pasting

  1. This is a ‘Paste the Wall’ product. The decorator should paste the wall not the back of the product.
  2. Use a Premium Quality Tub Adhesive or an equivalent good quality, solvent free, fungicide protected, light grade adhesive. Do not use Self-Mixed Adhesives. All Purpose and Heavy Duty Pastes are not suitable.
  3. Cut the lengths to size, according to the height of the wall, allowing margin at the top and bottom for trimming, ensuring the design is the correct way up. If in doubt which way up the design should be please view on our website.
  4. Generously paste an even coat of adhesive onto the wall, wider than the width of the wallcovering making sure to avoid pasting hung lengths.

Hanging Wallpaper

  1. Hang the product vertically using a plumb line for the first length. Smooth the product evenly onto the surface with a soft, clean decorators’ roller to expel air bubbles.
  2. Butt joint subsequent lengths and avoid overlapping.
  3. Carefully wipe off any excess paste from the surface of the product immediately, with a clean, damp sponge (dried paste could damage the surface).
  4. We suggest that the wallcovering is allowed to dry out naturally and therefore recommend that central heating is turned off in the room until this has taken place.

Maintenance Suggestions

This wallcovering is wipeable.

The wall covering exhibits temporary resistance to most mild substances.
However, all staining must be removed as soon as possible.
Wipe with a clean damp cloth only. Start from the bottom, work upwards to avoid dirty water running down.

NOTE: Do not over-wet the surface of the paper.

How to hang a mural

  • All our murals are designed to repeat side to side at 210cm width.
  • A roll contains a single mural repeat comprising of 3 separate panels each 300cm in height x 70cms width.
  • Make sure you have enough rolls to cover the width of the wall. Each roll covers 210cm width ie. a 6m width wall will require 3 rolls.
  • Unwrap and cut out the panels, cutting marks are indicated on the roll. Be sure to keep the panels in sequence before starting to decorate.
  • If your walls are less than 300cm in height you will need to decide in advance if you would like to cut the excess off the top or bottom, the design usually dictates this choice ie. the plain area would be at the top or the base of the design.
  • Cut the panels to size, according to the height of the wall, allowing margin at the top or bottom for trimming, ensuring the design is the correct way up. If in doubt which way up the design should be please view on our website.
  • Use a plumb bob or laser level to provide a straight line.
  • Only use a Paste the Wall ready mixed tub adhesive and apply directly to the wall.
  • After applying the first mural panel, smooth everything down and cut off the excess.
  • Carefully wipe off any excess paste from the surface of the product immediately, with a clean, damp sponge (dried paste could damage the surface).
  • Continue by applying the next two panels in sequence ensuring that pattern matches correctly.
  • If the mural has an obvious central element, you may consider the placement on the wall within the number of rolls used. Please discuss with your decorator before proceeding.
